Some of the Best Bands/Musicians You Have Never Heard Of
66Music is Love
I hear many people complaining that music isn't what it use to be. This may be true if you're only listening to what's on the radio. In fact, to me, music has evolved ten fold from the classics. You just need to know where to look. There are also so many more genres of music today than ever before. I have listed eleven different artists, from eleven different genres that you may or may not have heard of.
Mumford & Sons - Folk Rock
Mumford & Sons is a great folk rock band from Great Britain. The band which was formed in 2007 gained fame after the release of their Sigh No More album and great performance at the 2011 Grammy Awards. The band has won numerous awards including three Billboard Music Awards. They use bluegrass and folk instruments in a alternative rock style while incorporating literary content in their lyrics. Below is one of their more popular songs, The Cave, which is up for three Grammy awards this year.
Tegan & Sara - Indie Rock
Tegan and Sara are twin sisters from Canada who have been making music since 1995. Their style of music is best known as Indie Rock. They have released six albums during their career and have gained some mainstream success. At the same time, they have gone relatively unnoticed. Tegan & Sara have dozens of great songs and It's hard to pick just one to showcase on here. Below is a song called the The Con released in 2007. (the link doesn't the play video right away, press the follow to youtube line)
Kid Cudi - Alternative Hip Hop/ Rap
Kid Cudi is one of those artists that's hard to pinpoint to a specific genre. He has a strong base of fans who find his music inspirational. A lot of his followers have said that he has style all his own. He doesn't get a lot of air time compared to the other hip hop/ rap artists out there, but is still pretty popular. Below is the song Up Up and Away.
Dispatch- Acoustic Rock/Alternative
Dispatch emerged onto the scene in the late 90s and early 2000s. Their music consists of acoustic style drawn from indie folk, reggae, and jam band roots. Dispatch went on a decade long hiatus and only recently came back in 2011. Below is one of their more popular songs, Two Coins.
India Arie - R&B
One of the genres missing on the airwaves today is R&B. India Arie is classic R&B without the mainstream success. Below is the song Little Things.
Josh Turner - Country
Josh Turner is probably the most mainstream artist on this list but I'm still shocked when people tell me they have never heard of him. And, this is coming from somebody who's not big into country. Turner has released four albums in his decade long career. He has had a couple of number one hits including the one below, Why Dont We Just Dance.
The Dirty Heads - Reggae Rock
The Dirty Heads are a group from Southern California. Their style of music is known as reggae rock but they also incorporate some hip hop and punk into their songs. They have been compared to Sublime, 311, and Kottonmouth Kings. Their debut album released in 2008 along with the track below, Lay Me Down.
Motion City Soundtrack - Pop Punk
Motion City Soundtrack was formed in 1997 and has released four studio albums. The band has a unique style that is hard to categorize into one genre. They have recently signed with the major record company but have never gotten great air time play. Below is the song The Future Freaks Me Out from their debut album.
Dragonforce - Power Metal
I rarely listen to metal but my metal loving friends love Dragonforce. The British band, formed in 1999, have released four albums. Below is the song Through the Fire and Flames released in 2006.
Bayside - Punk Rock/ Alternative
Bayside from Queens, NY was formed in 2000. They have released five albums. Their style of music is most commonly considered punk rock.
Carly Rae Jepsen - Pop
I recently stumbled on Carly Rae Jepsen through a few friends (girls and guys!) that just love the song Call Me Maybe below. Jepsen placed third in the talent show, Candian Idol.
